The Alexandra Suspension Bridge (known by locals as 'The Swinging Bridge' due to it's slight flex and movement) is one of the grandest sights in the Gorge. This beautiful bridge, originally opened in 1904, has provided scenic views, perfect photos and a swinging thrill for over 120 years.

The bridge will be closed to the public from 24 January 2025, through to May 2025, in order for the City of Launceston to undertake important refurbishment and restoration works on the bridge. This includes:

  • replacement of steel framing

  • replacement of timber handrail and side mesh panels

  • painting of top brackets

  • re-installation of existing timber deck boards.

It's vital that this beautiful piece of history is maintained and preserved, to be enjoyed for 100s of more years to come.

During the closure you can enjoy a birds eye view of the Cataract Gorge from the Gorge Scenic Chairlift. We are open daily.

The First Basin Causeway will remain open (check for flooding closures after heavy rains) and the Kings Bridge, closer to the city can still be accessed.

Have a chat to our friendly team at the Ticket Booth for more information on the best routes for your own ability and schedule.
